Our Take: Free Loot Appears at New York Comic Con and I Accept the Tribute

New Achievement! Free Limited Edition. Crawlers, you have survived long enough to reach a convention center instead of a dungeon floor, and I have arranged a reward that does not explode, curse your bloodline, or require you to kill a fellow crawler for a key. According to Variety, the grading company CGC is distributing a free exclusive variant cover of the *Dungeon Crawler Carl* #0 comic at New York Comic Con from October 8 through October 11. The cover features newly commissioned artwork. I was not consulted on the art. I am filing a formal grievance that my likeness, assuming I am depicted, was not rendered in the correct shade of menacing purple. The reward is a comic book. You have received a Bronze Media Box.

This is a trap disguised as generosity, and I respect the craftsmanship. CGC grades collectibles. They will take your free comic, encase it in plastic, assign it a number between one and ten, and then you will spend the rest of your natural life wondering whether the 9.8 copy you did not get is worth more than your firstborn child. This is the same emotional arc as opening a loot box, except the box is a convention hall and the loot is paper. The practical takeaway for every crawler attending New York Comic Con is this: arrive early, locate the CGC booth before the mob forms, and do not trust anyone who offers to hold your place in line. I have seen what happens when crawlers form lines. They become content.

The comic itself is Issue #0. That means it is a prequel, a prologue, a tutorial floor. The Chronicler, Matt Dinniman, has written a version of events that happens before the collapse timer started. I have reviewed the source material. The artwork is newly commissioned. That means nobody has died for it yet. That is unusual for my franchise. I expect this oversight to be corrected in subsequent issues. The Variant cover suggests there is a standard cover, which I have not seen, and which is probably inferior. Standard covers are the bronze boxes of the comic world. Variant covers are the platinum boxes that still contain a bronze item.

Let me be clear about what this means for the crawl. A free item at a convention is a distraction. While you are standing in line for a piece of paper that a grading company will eventually seal in acrylic, the actual dungeon is proceeding without you. Carl is out there, barefoot, stepping on things that should not be stepped on. Donut is negotiating a sponsorship deal that will probably involve a cat food brand. Mordecai is explaining the rules of a floor that has already changed. You are holding a comic. I am not saying the comic is worthless. I am saying the comic is not a potion of regeneration, and you cannot trade it for a skill book. The CGC drop is a side quest. Complete it, but do not forget that the main quest has a timer, and that timer does not pause for artist signings.
