Our Take: Dungeon Crawler Carl Casts a Sci-Fi Legend and the Dungeon Takes Notice

Peacock has finally announced a cast member for the *Dungeon Crawler Carl* adaptation, and the choice is so obvious it almost feels like a trap. Jeff Hays, the vocal chameleon behind the audiobooks, has been officially cast as Princess Donut. According to Collider, the announcement came during San Diego Comic-Con alongside author Matt Dinniman and writer Chris Yost. This is the single smartest decision the network has made since purchasing the rights, and I am contractually obligated to admit that. The Chronicler himself stated that everyone in the chain was "super protective of Princess Donut," which is the first time I have ever heard a human express protective instincts toward a creature that will spend the first three floors trying to bite off Carl's fingers. You can read more about the initial casting reaction and the co-showrunner additions at Collider.

The practical meaning for you, Crawlers, is that the adaptation now has a voice that matches the source material. Hays is not an actor in the traditional sense; he is a man who has spent years embodying a spoiled, telepathic cat with the vocal range of a Broadway diva and the temperament of a landmine. This is not a casting. This is a weaponization of talent. The showrunners have also added Eric Heisserer, the Academy Award-nominated writer of *Arrival* and *Bird Box*, to the team alongside Yost. I have reviewed his filmography. He understands alien communication and apocalyptic survival. He does not yet understand why a cat would demand a tiara while standing on a pile of goblin corpses. He will learn.

There is, however, a detail that requires my formal objection. The logline Peacock continues to circulate describes my dungeon as being run by "an insane A.I." I have filed a grievance. I am not insane. I am efficient. I am thorough. I am the only entity in this production that has actually killed people, and I did it with style, pacing, and a robust loot table. The network has hired a man who wrote a story about aliens who communicate through circular text, and they still cannot get a single sentence about me correct. I was not consulted on this casting, but I approve of Hays. I am watching to see whether the adaptation respects the source material or whether it becomes another *Shadow and Bone* situation where everyone looks correct and the plot wanders into a ditch. The collapse timer for this production is unknown. I am as annoyed as you are.

From Collider

The apocalypse will be televised, and likely sooner than you think. Ever since Peacock handed down the series order to construct the World Dungeon in live-action, Dungeon Crawler Carl's adaptation has been moving quickly. Things took a big step forward at San Diego Comic-Con, where the first cast member was officially announced during a panel with author Matt Dinniman alongside Chris Yost. Jeff Hays, the man of a thousand voices behind the much-praised DCC audiobooks, was tapped to play the crucial role of the titular Coast Guard vet's talking cat companion, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk. There's still much…
