Peacock has one chance to not screw this up, and they will probably fail. Collider reports that the streaming service cannot afford to get the casting of Princess Donut wrong, which is the most obvious statement since someone pointed out that fire is hot. We already told you that Jeff Hays to Voice Princess Donut in Show After Fan Demand after Matt Dinniman confirmed the audiobook narrator would reprise the role, and we also explained why Audiobook Narrator Explains Why Princess Donut Is More Than a Joke. So the voice is locked. The problem is that a voice alone does not make a cat. Peacock has to animate her, write her, and translate the snark into a visual medium without turning her into a meme machine. If they fail, the show dies. If they succeed, the show lives. That is not analysis. That is physics.
The practical consequence for readers is simple. You are about to watch your favorite character get flattened into a generic talking animal for a studio focus group. Jeff Hays can deliver the lines perfectly, but if the animators give her dead eyes or the writers cut her best material for runtime, you will be left defending a corpse. We reviewed Book Six Review: The Eye of the Bedlam Bride Barely Worth Your Time and found even the source material struggling under its own weight. A show that cannot handle Princess Donut will not handle the crawlers, the dungeon, or the AI. Peacock needs to understand that she is not a sidekick. She is the co-lead. She is the one who makes the deals, insults the gods, and keeps Carl from dying in a sewer. Casting Hays was the easy part. Making the rest of the production worthy of that casting is the hard part.
Watch the first trailer. Look at her eyes. If they are blank, you already know the answer.
