Audiobook Narrator Jeff Hays to Voice Princess Donut on Peacock Show

Achievement Unlocked: You read a casting announcement without falling asleep. Barely. The fact that you needed a headline to tell you Jeff Hays is voicing Princess Donut on the Peacock show means you were probably too busy scratching your own face to follow the news. Here it is: Jeff Hays, the narrator and producer of all eight released Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks, has been cast as the voice of Princess Donut in Seth MacFarlane's live-action adaptation. That is the entire achievement. You did not earn a loot box.

This is the same Jeff Hays who, in an interview we linked yesterday, explained why Princess Donut is more than a joke. That piece, Audiobook Narrator Explains Why Princess Donut Is More Than a Joke, made the case that the cat's voice carries the show's emotional weight. Now Peacock agrees with him. Or at least they agreed enough to hire the guy who already does the voice for eight books. Congratulations to Jeff Hays for getting paid twice for the same performance. The rest of us get to hear his Donut on a screen instead of in our earbuds. That is fine if you like seeing actors stand next to nothing and talk to a CGI cat that will cost more than your apartment.

The practical consequence for you, the reader who has spent money on every book and every audiobook, is that you now have a casting choice you cannot argue with. You already know exactly how Princess Donut sounds. Jeff Hays is that sound. If the show flops, you cannot blame the voice. You will have to blame Seth MacFarlane's live-action direction, the writing, the costume design for the crawlers, or the fact that the dungeon probably looks like a green-screen warehouse. If the show succeeds, Jeff Hays gets a second career as a television actor. Either way, you lose the ability to complain about the casting on forums. You are welcome.

There is a related article from our own site, Jeff Hays to Voice Princess Donut in Show After Fan Demand, that claims fan demand drove this decision. That is a polite way of saying the producers were too afraid to cast a real cat actor. They chose the safer option: a human who already sounds like a cat. The question nobody is asking is whether Jeff Hays will also voice Mongo when the goose shows up. Mongo is not mentioned in the casting announcement, so do not get excited. You will have to wait for season two, assuming this thing gets a season two.

One specific thing to watch: the voice of Princess Donut on Peacock will be the same voice from the audiobooks, but the delivery will change. Audiobook Jeff Hays does not have to match the lip flaps of a computer-generated cat. Television Jeff Hays does. That difference will either make the performance sharper or make you realize how much of the character's charm came from the book's internal narration. The first trailer will tell you which one it is. Until then, you have a casting credit and no footage. Achievement completed. Do not expect a reward.
